Description
HIV is a virus that infects the human immune system, fighting infections and possibly leading to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). There are two types of the virus: HIV-1 and HIV-2. It is important to test both types because they require different tests for diagnosis and people infected with HIV-2 may test negative on some HIV-1 tests. HIV-1 is easier to transmit and progresses more quickly. People with HIV-2 may remain asymptomatic for many years before developing symptoms.
In Europe, more than 560,000 people have been diagnosed with HIV, and 18,000 more receive a positive HIV diagnosis each year. HIV has a disproportionate impact on certain populations, particularly gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
The Newfoundland HIV Test is an immunochromatographic, rapid in vitro diagnostic test for the detection of antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in whole blood. The sterile lancet and blood collection unit are integrated into one cassette, making testing less error-prone.
